A quick trip back to the Emerald Isle October 2010

Not long after our Antrim trip,I was back over to the Emerald Isle. Not such a happy occasion this time,I was attending the burial of a close relative.
Back up the foothills of the Cuilcagh mountain in Glangevlin to the old homestead at Dunmakeever.

The rolling hills of West Cavan look as lush as ever.

The requiem mass was well attended, with family coming from far and wide.Even this frog was trying to get into the church.

But as well as being a sombre occasion,it was also a celebration of his life, and it was good to meet up again with some of the nicest people I know. The immediate family made sure that the extended family were enfolded in the occasion.

Up from Kildare came a rebel of a musician by the name of Mick Molloy (Not to be confused with Matt Molloy of the Chieftains, though Mick has sung with Kila),accompanied by his missus Rosie.

I hadn't my video camera with me,so the film quality is found wanting, but an enjoyable time was had by all at the bar.

All too soon I had to vacate the hen house my tent was in and make my way back to Belfast and the boat.

I was back early enough to take a run up to Carrickfergus....

...and view some of the sights.

Back in Scotland on a clear day the chimney of the Kilroot power station in Belfast Lough can often be seen.I'm much closer today.

The Harland and Wolff and other dock cranes show me the way back to the ferry.

I'm soon back at the quayside.

As I wait to board the Stena Navigator,I take some more pictures and reflect on my short and poignant trip.

RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre

On Thursday the 2nd of March 2023 me and my partner Jane were in Warrington.
I'd just been a nice long walk and Jane had been shopping.
At the junction where she picked me up we saw a sign for the RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre.

After lunch we decided we'd pay a visit.
Some of my earliest memories are from this area, my dad had been transferred from RAF Northcoats in Lincolnshire to RAF Croft near Warrington and we were in quarters on the camp.
I was only 4 years old and one incident comes to mind. Me and Billy Griffiths were grounded for throwing stones and breaking windows. Looking at the pictures on the Croft page I think I recognise which windows ! 😊

Jane's dad was in the Fleet Air Arm so this was a visit we were both nterested in.
Much of Burtonwood is now in the hands of Gullivers World Theme park,
https://www.gulliversworldresort.co.uk/
and they work in conjunction with the heritage centre, so families with children get to know a little bit of history.
It's free admission but after visiting you'll want to buy a souvenir or put some money in the donations globe.
There's a 12 minute film of archive footage and the staff are friendly and very knowledgeable.
This was a brilliant place to visit and I hope my pictures do it justice.
We will hopefully be back.

Caley View - Rhos on Sea

I'm older. I've had another operation on my back. I've forgotten how to blog and layouts and templates have changed so much. Still....small steps. This pictures was taken around a quarter of a mile from where I live with my partner Jane. It's a lovely spot. We live in Rhos on Sea in North Wales. I'm thinking The Glebe Blog will just become another outlet for my pictures besides Facebook. Me and Jane are going to get away to some old and some new locations this next two years. That's likely to be the future postings. A big hello to my previous followers if you're still interested. See you in the blogosphere ☺
