Wigtownshire Ramblers-Larg and Craignaw Hills July 2011

I'm taking a few short cuts on this post.
Much of today's report I've copied and pasted from the previous report of this walk.
Also, since I posted the recce there's not going to be many more pictures.

Wigtownshire Ramblers Saturday the 9th of July 2011.
Walk Report.

Holidays and other commitments saw a depleted group of ten walkers meeting at the Caldons Car Park for the walk to Larg Hill and Craignaw. The weather forecast was for any showers to die out.

The 'Weaver' gets sprayed with repellent.

The first part of the walk was on forest road for over 4 miles. A steady incline in a generally southerly direction gave views over the Water of Minnoch. The memorial cairn and ruins of the village at Holm Ferrach were another feature of this section.
After crossing the Pulniskie Burn at Thrawin Step they continued heading south until they reached the drystane dyke at Craigenteasy.A refreshment break was taken before beginning the ascent.

Leaving the forest road they now began the climb northeast towards the summits of Larg Hill.

Staying alongside the dyke and climbing in a north easterly direction, the going underfoot was grassy tussocks interspersed with boggy holes. A fairly steep incline slowed progress, but height was gained and upon reaching Punch Well Brae, a lunch break was taken.

Once clear of the forest, conditions underfoot got easier.Heather replaced the tussocky grass.

I get in the picture at the West Summit.

After a short stop at the first of Largs two summits at 659 mtrs they continued on to the higher 676 mtr peak. Here well known landmarks and surrounding hills were identified, photographs were taken. Here too, views over to the neighbouring well known Galloway hills were extensive, with the majority of them being easily recognisable.

A group photo at the higher summit.

From here a descent down a steep green stripe through a stony brae saw them reach Strifeland on Mulmein Moss.

Another group photograph. This one on Craignaw.

Next came the steepest descent of the walk as the group made their way down the grassy slope to the Mulmein Burn.

Walking alongside the burn they carefully picked their way down, first on one bank and then the other before it joined and became part of the Caldons Burn.

Smile, you're on Candid Camera.

By now the clouds had cleared and the sun shone brightly.Bell heather and wild orchids added colour.

The next walk, on Saturday the 16th of July will be a ' C ' grade walk in the south Rhins taking in New England Bay.

Meet at the Riverside car park Newton Stewart at 9.00 am,the Breastworks, Stranraer at 9.30 am for car sharing, or at the walk start at Ardwell Car Park (NX 110 454) at 10.00am.
